Law Day Essay Contest
The 2019 Toledo Bar Association Caty Armstrong Memorial Law Day Essay Contest
For Students in Grades 7 through 12
Write an essay on the topic:
LAW DAY 2019: Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society
Freedom of speech and freedom of the press are so essential to our nation that the Framers included them in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Throughout our nation's history, lawmakers, judges, and the American people have debated how far those rights should extend. In recent years, with the rise of 24/7 cable news, social media, and smart phones, freedom of speech and freedom of the press have been, and continue to be, tested in new ways.
How have freedom of speech and freedom of the press been challenged throughout U.S. history? In today’s society, what limitations, if any, should the government be allowed to place on speech and the press and why? Please refrain from targeting specific individuals in your essay.
Each essay will be judged based upon format, clarity, style, reasoning, creativity and overall effort.
PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR ENTRY BY: 3:30 P.M. FRIDAY, MARCH 8, 2019, AT THE TOLEDO BAR ASSOCIATION. BY MAIL: 311 N. SUPERIOR, TOLEDO, OH 43604; FAX: 419-242-3614; OR EMAIL (see Rule 5): firstname.lastname@example.org
