Meiers, Jr. of Black McCuskey Souers & Arbaugh, L.P.A. and chair of the TBA’s Law Related School Education (LRSE) Committee will present the students with awards on Friday, May 6, 2022 at the TBA’s 2022 Caty Armstrong Memorial Law Day Essay Contest Luncheon. The Honorable Jack Zouhary, Senior Judge at the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Ohio, Western Division, will speak to the students after the award presentation.

Introduction to the Essay Theme:
The Constitution is a dynamic document, as it not only outlines a blueprint for government, but also delegates power, articulates rights, and offers mechanisms for change. It is neither perfect, nor exhaustive, as our nation’s history makes clear. Legislation, court rulings, amendments, lawyers, and “we the people” have built upon those original words across generations to attempt to make the “more perfect Union” more real. That effort continues today, as contemporary leaders and everyday citizens raise their voices as loud as ever to fulfill the promise of the Constitution. Defining and refining those words of the Constitution might be our oldest national tradition, and how each of us works—together—toward a more perfect Union.

Essay Question:
In response to societal changes and new challenges facing our nation, the Constitution has been amended 27 times. Choose one of the Amendments and explain why you think it was an important addition. Or, if you could propose your own Amendment, what would it be and why?

About Law Day
Law Day was established by President Eisenhower in 1958 to honor the law and is celebrated annually on or around May 1st by bar associations and the legal profession nationwide.

The essay contest for students has been an integral part of Law Day festivities for many years. This annual contest encourages youth to explore our legal system and the relationship between laws and our rights and freedoms. The Toledo Bar Association contest was named the Caty Armstrong Law Day Essay Contest after Caty’s tragic death in an automobile accident in 1993 just weeks after she was recognized as an essay contest winner.

The TBA’s Law Related School Education Committee’s mission is to develop and implement programs designed to assist all levels of our educational system in the education of students in our community about the legal system and the system of justice, including the organization of various Law Day activities and Mock Trial programs.

Honorable Glenda Hatchett to Keynote the 2022 Access to Justice Awards Dinner on May 12

TOLEDO, OH, – Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE), Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc. (LAWO) and the Toledo Bar Association Pro Bono Legal Services Program (TBA) will honor three individuals and an organization for their extraordinary service to people living in poverty in northwest Ohio: James Nooney, Sr., for his work with pro se guardianship applicants; David L. Beckwith for his life-long dedication to grassroots organizing and social justice; Beatriz Maya for her commitment to assisting migrant farm workers, immigrants, refugees, and the Latinx community; and the Dana Legal Department for its history of service to the Medical-Legal Partnership for Children in Toledo.

The awards will be presented during the Access to Justice Awards Dinner on May 12, 2022, at The Pinnacle in Maumee. The event, which is attended by over 500 guests each year, is led by the northwest Ohio legal community with proceeds to support legal services in our region. A sponsor and VIP reception will kick off the festivities at 6 p.m., followed by a public reception at 6:30 p.m., and the dinner and awards ceremony starting at 7 p.m.

This year's Access to Justice Awards Dinner keynote speaker is the Honorable Glenda Hatchett, Georgia’s first African American Chief Presiding Judge of a state court and former head of one of the largest juvenile court systems in the country. She is a graduate of Emory University School of Law and an Earl Warren Scholar. Judge Hatchett has keynoted several national conferences, including the Diversity Conference in the U.S. Senate, the Minority Employer’s Conference at Newell Rubbermaid, Home Depot’s Women’s History Speaker’s Series, and Black Enterprise’s Entrepreneurs Conference. She has received many awards, including the Outstanding Jurist of the Year, Atlanta affiliate of the National Bar Association; Roscoe Pound Award, National Council on Crime and Delinquency; and the Thurgood Marshall Award, NAACP, among others. Most recently, Judge Hatchett returned to TV in her new television court series, The Verdict.

The 2022 Public Interest Law Award recipient is James Nooney, Sr., a member of Eastman & Smith and Toledo-area attorney who has been practicing law for 54 years. Nooney regularly takes on a variety of pro bono cases, including tort defense, and has most recently been helping TBA’s Pro Bono Program assist clients with the paperwork for guardianships. Providing legal services to those unable to pay for them is a core feature of Nooney’s professional identity. He believes that providing pro-bono services is a responsibility of all professionals and in particular lawyers. He is often encouraging his colleagues and newer associates to take on pro bono work.

Two individuals are receiving 2022 Community Advocacy Awards for their roles in fostering change through community organizing.

Beatriz Maya is receiving a 2022 Community Advocacy Award for her endless pursuit of empowering immigrants, refugees, farmworkers, and the Latinx community. Her advocacy began decades ago when she worked for the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC), doing everything in her power to bring education and justice to migrant farmworkers. She is the founder of La Conexion (founded in 2013), a nonprofit comprised of Latinx residents of northwest Ohio who come together to bring unity, voice, representation, and advance the rights of the growing Latinx community in the area. Maya was also instrumental in forming the Northwest Ohio Immigrant Rights Network (NWOIRN) in 2019. The network of advocates and allies is comprised of immigrant-based organizations, advocacy groups, and individuals acting in solidarity with our immigrant community to build humane, just, inclusive, safe, equitable, and welcoming communities for everyone.

David L. Beckwith is receiving an award posthumously for his contributions as a community organizer for more than 50 years. Beckwith’s local organizing efforts began in 1981 when he assumed the role of director of the East Toledo Community Organization, focusing on housing and neighborhood issues, including the environment and economic development. Additional professional positions include principal of the Great Lakes Institute, executive director of the Needmor Fund, and research associate at the University of Toledo’s Urban Affairs Center. But it was really Beckwith’s way with people that earned him this award. Known as a community mentor for social justice and environmental activists in the Toledo community, Beckwith touched the lives of many and motivated others to understand that they had the power to lead and to hold people accountable for their actions.

Dana Incorporated is the recipient of the 2022 Distinguished Service Award. The company and its people have a long history of service to legal aid and the Medical-Legal Partnership for Children (MLPC) in Toledo. Creating the Corporate Counsel Legal Aid Fellowship in 2013, Dana's Legal Department worked tirelessly to form a unique partnership among the counsel of the major corporations in northwest Ohio with ABLE and LAWO. Their support expanded the capacity of the firms to serve more vulnerable families through the MLPC, which addresses the social determinants of health through partnering with medical providers. Dana's assistance allowed the MLPC to grow and garner other financial support, helping nearly 3,500 people in poverty between 2013 and 2021. Dana’s steadfast engagement and service launched the project's success, and this vital work continues to date. In addition, the Dana Charitable Foundation has also provided ongoing support to ABLE and LAWO.

MLK Jr. Day

Here are a few ways you can celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. this year:

COMMIT TO SERVICE

In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his commitment to social justice and community activism, we ask that you consider volunteering with the TBA Pro Bono Program. The Pro Bono Program continues to connect volunteer attorneys with low-income individuals in a variety of legal issues. Contact Maggie Humphrey, Director of Pro Bono & Community Engagement to volunteer for a full representation pro bono case or consider one of the opportunities below to make a difference in our local community.

EDUCATE YOURSELF

Consider a self-study CLE this Monday that focuses on Diversity, Inclusion and Race Equity.

Lessons From the Life: Growing Up Black in White
Kevin Hofmann’s layered racial resume has led him to write Growing Up Black in White, a compelling memoir revealing his difficulties and joys growing up in a diverse family –particularly during a time and in a location where acceptance was tentative and emotions regarding race ran high and hot. Because his story also addresses the impact of race and culture in society, it serves as a catalyst for open discussions on diversity and inclusion as well as race and culture.

Enhancing Justice by Reducing Bias
This program introduces lawyers to the most recent research on the issue of implicit bias. The first half of the presentation will be spent talking about how our brain processes information and how researchers have determined implicit bias exists. The second half will address how implicit bias is currently being discussed in several areas of law from criminal-prosecution and defense, to employment law, health care law, and property law to name a few.

Cross Cultural Lawyering
This 90-minute presentation engages lawyers across practice areas to discuss the impact of race and culture on legal representation. A segment of the presentation will focus on pro bono representation of individuals experiencing poverty and often individuals from marginalized groups. Cross-Cultural training can allow pro bono attorneys to understand the traumatization, oppression, systemic inequities, and root causes faced by people experiencing poverty and people of color. Examining these at not only the systemic, but structural and institutional levels, we will also consider how our work as lawyers could lead to transformation in the legal system.

CELEBRATE IN UNITY

Enjoy the Virtual 2022 MLK Experience
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Day Celebration will be held virtually on January 17, 2022 from 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at toledo.oh.gov/MLK and will feature keynote speaker Andre Gaines, renown Producer, Director, and Financier. He will be joined by speakers Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz and Dr. Gregory Postel, president of The University of Toledo. The Toledo Museum of Art will host a special day of in-person activities during special museum hours on January 17, 2022 from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. including screenings of The One and Only Dick Gregory which was directed by Andre Gaines, and a recorded display of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s I Have a Dream speech. The Family Center will have crafts for youth and there will be glass blowing demonstrations in the Glass Pavilion.

Support a Local Black-Owned Business
One of the most direct ways you can support the Black community is shopping local, Black-owned businesses in your community and when you travel. There's a huge variety of Black-owned businesses in the Toledo area offering tasty cuisine, craft beer, unique art, retail shopping and more.

The Long Walk to Freedom
Take a Virtual Tour of the National Civil Rights Museum at the Historic Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee and hear in-depth stories from the modern civil rights movement.

Visit the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library (TLCPL)
TLCPL will be closed on Monday, January 17th. We encourage you to stop in to view, and read a story from the “Telling a People's Story: African American Children's Illustrated Literature” Panel Exhibition which is open through January 23, 2022. Each location hosting this exhibit will display three of twelve different panels. All twelve panels feature African American illustrators depicting the trials and triumphs of the African American people. Along with each panel, enjoy a corresponding book for onsite customer reading. The exhibits will be featured at the Heatherdowns, Sylvania, Oregon, and Sanger Branches. Visit each of these four locations to see all twelve of these impactful panels.

Today, January 11, is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. In recognition of this important day, we encourage you to not only participate in #WearBlueDay but also to consider volunteering with the TBA Pro Bono Program through a new partnership with Ao: Advocating Opportunity to help meet the legal needs of human trafficking victims in the Toledo area.

AO provides legal services and whole person advocacy for trafficked and exploited persons. Often, clients have multiple legal issues and AO needs assistance with discrete cases in the following areas: family law, divorce, record sealing, benefits law, CPOs and bankruptcy. Each client has a Client Advocate assigned to them who would work with pro bono counsel and AO Staff Attorneys would also assist where needed.

We see this as a great opportunity for TBA Pro Bono volunteers to lend a hand and provide pro bono assistance to AO clients. Any volunteers would receive training from AO staff on human trafficking and working with victims.

If you are interested in assisting with the project, please reach out to Maggie Humphrey (mhumphrey@toledobar.org), Director of Pro Bono & Community Engagement.

Our Mission: Justice for All

America holds close the ideal of equal justice for all, but all too often, justice is out of reach for many of its most vulnerable citizens. Civil legal aid steps in to ensure that this promise is made a reality for the thousands of individuals and families who need representation in the justice system, but could not otherwise afford an attorney. By giving to the Justice for All Campaign, you can make justice a reality for individuals and families in northwest Ohio.

The Justice for All Campaign is a fundraising partnership among

  • Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE)
  • Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc. (LAWO) and
  • The Toledo Bar Association (TBA) Pro Bono Legal Services Program.

As the sole providers of free civil legal aid to low-income residents of northwest Ohio, the Justice for All Campaign unites our fundraising efforts to ensure that vulnerable and disenfranchised members of our community have equal access to the legal system.

Each year, thousands of people in our community request legal help from LAWO, TBA Pro Bono, and ABLE. Through gifts from our friends and supporters in the Toledo legal community, we are able to provide life-changing assistance to victims of elder abuse, veterans, survivors of domestic violence, and many families living, working, and raising their children in poverty who struggle to meet their day-to-day needs of housing, food, healthcare, or education for their children. But even though we served so many, there are still more who need our help, and we ask that you support us again this year.

Members of Our Community Need Your Help

Your investment in the Justice for All Campaign gives hope to our clients and creates stability in the community as their legal problems are resolved. Options for supporting the work of ABLE, the TBA Pro Bono Legal Services Program, and LAWO are as varied as the programs and services we offer. Whatever your interest—helping children, preventing homelessness, providing safety, rebuilding neighborhoods, protecting civil rights, providing for veterans—there is opportunity within this campaign.
